Taylor’s boyfriend won that game that was played last weekend. I heard it was quite a nail biter. But as you can imagine, my attention was all on the commercial breaks… and the ads did not disappoint! Here’s a round up of my faves.
My top 5 are ones where celebs weren’t afraid to poke a bit of fun at themselves, but I’ll get to those in a second.
First, two serious ads really caught my attention.
“Hard Knocks” – Dove
I’m a mom of two pre-teen girls (who unfortunately have no interest in sports), I know how body image issues can completely rob them of their confidence and hold them back from showing their true selves. This Dove ad really connected with me, as I’m sure it did with other parents.
“Silence” – Foundation to Combat Antisemitism
As a jew, I have experienced antisemitism many times in my life. It’s unfortunately not new. However, the sharp increase in the hate directed towards jews in the wake of October 7th, has me horrified and scared. I never thought we’d need to pay $7M to run an ad asking people not to hate us, yet here we are.
#5. Don’t Forget Uber Eats – Uber Eats
I have to include this one in my list, because the Beckhams’ teaser for this was just so good, in my opinion, even better than the ad itself, albeit a bit more niche (you had to have watched their Netflix special). In any case, reuniting Rachel and Ross anywhere will always win my vote.
4. “Talkin’ like a Walken” – BMW
BMW bets on how fed up Walken must be of constantly hearing everyone imitate his speaking pattern. Though Walken is pretty easy to imitated (to various degrees of success), there is nothing like the original. “It, IS, so good.” *in my best Walken voice*.
3. “Michael CeraVe” – CeraVe
What does Michael Cera have to do with skincare? Absolutely nothing, but I am totally here for it. This commercial is right up my alley, poking fun at cheesy perfume and beauty commercials. This ad make ZERO sense, in the best possible way. (Props for seeding paparazzi-like images and a podcast interview to really take this campaign to the next level).
2. “Like a good Neighbaaa” – State Farm
Aaanold gets in a choppaaa and helps neighbaaas and women in labaaaa, in this State Farm ad. In the end, it’s his “Twin” who saves the day for the insurance company.
1. “The DunKings” – Dunkin’
The kind of commercial you can watch on mute and STILL laugh. With J-Lo, Tom Brady, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the ad had plenty of star power backing Dunkin’ and representing Boston. By the way, those track suits are all sold out. I checked.
Honourable mention goes to an ad that didn’t even air during the game, but used a clever strategy to get some attention none-the-less.
“Biggest Ad Ever” – Liquid Death
They created an awesomely garish ad auctioning off the side of Liquid Death packaging. An e-bay bidding frenzy ensued. Coca Cola’s Smart Water attempted to hijack it all (unsuccessfully). A winning bid, who may not have actually won, and the drama continues.
