Should You Be on Bluesky?

Bluesky isn’t the next TikTok. And it’s not trying to be. But, with over 34M users, it is gaining traction. Especially among creators, developers, journalists, and early tech adopters. And if your audience skews toward any of those groups (or you’re just looking for a fresh space to build brand equity), it might be time to take a closer look.

What Is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform built on the AT Protocol. What does that mean in practice? For now, it looks and feels a lot like Twitter (notice I said Twitter, not X), but with a smaller, more engaged crowd and no algorithm shoving content into your feed.

The vibe is less polished, more conversational. Think of it as Twitter in its early days: raw, curious, and community-driven.

So… Should Your Brand Be There?

Short answer: maybe.

If you’re a big brand targeting mass-market consumers? It’s too early.
If you’re a personal brand, indie creator, startup, or B2B company? You might benefit from being there now, especially if you’re willing to show up as a person, not a corporate logo.

Right now, it’s best suited for:

  • Founders or marketers building thought leadership
  • Niche B2B companies targeting developers, designers, or tech-forward users
  • Brands experimenting with community-driven marketing
  • Anyone who missed early Twitter and wants a do-over

What’s the Strategy?

If you do join, don’t treat it like another sales channel. Use it to build trust, curiosity, and connection.

1. Be a Person First

People follow people, not logos. Even if you’re representing a business, use your name and face. Talk like a human. Share insights, wins, mistakes, things you’re noticing in your industry.

2. Post With Purpose

Start simple:

  • Quick tips or frameworks your audience would find helpful
  • Lessons learned from your day-to-day work
  • Smart replies to other people’s posts
  • Reposts with a short take

It doesn’t need to be polished, honest and useful is enough.

3. Build a Niche Reputation

Bluesky’s still small, which is a gift. Pick a lane and stay consistent:

  • Are you the go-to for small business marketing advice?
  • The voice of reason in a chaotic industry?
  • The one sharing under-the-radar tools?

Own a perspective.

4. Engage. Don’t Just Broadcast.

This isn’t a platform where you post and disappear. Comment on other people’s posts. Follow smart folks in your space. Ask questions. Be curious.

Things to Watch

  • Custom handles: You can use a domain name (e.g., you.yourbrand.com) as your username. It builds trust and makes you easy to find.
  • No DMs yet: This isn’t a lead gen tool (for now), but you can link to your email or site in your profile.
  • Third-party tools: Because it’s open-source, new features and apps are popping up fast. Keep an eye out for schedulers, analytics tools, and integrations.

Final word

Bluesky isn’t a “must” right now. But it’s a smart move for business owners who like being early, are building personal credibility, or want to test ideas in a low-stakes space.

If you’re going to join, don’t overthink it. Just start showing up, sharing value, and connecting with the kinds of people you want in your corner.
