The Anatomy of a Good Loyalty Program

Loyalty programs have come a long way from punch cards and coupon codes. For brands, these programs help drive repeat business, but they are also a goldmine ofย first-party data which are vital for brands thanks to the on-again-off-again death of third-party cookies.

But what makes a loyalty program worth joiningย andย staying loyal to? A recent study from Gale shared some great insights, and some interesting shifts in what consumers are looking for.

Infographic illustrating factors driving loyalty program sign-ups, including earning points and future discounts (73%), free shipping (53%), birthday deals (47%), and personalized offers (41%).

Value Gets You In the Door

Tangible perks remain the top driver of sign-ups:

  • 73%ย join for points and future discounts.
  • 53%ย want free shipping.
  • 47%ย appreciate birthday deals.
  • 41%ย look for personalized offers.

These benefits deliver the immediate value that makes someone click โ€œjoin.โ€ But theyโ€™re not enough to sustain long-term loyalty.

Connection Is What Keeps Consumers

Customers seeking relationships in addition to rewards.

  • 70%ย say an active community makes them more likely to join.
  • 81% of millennialsย andย 75% of Gen Zย see engagement as extremely important.
  • About a third stayed loyal long-term because of the relationships fostered.

On the flip side? About the same number quit programs that felt impersonal.

Transactional perks donโ€™t build emotional loyalty. Connection does.

Brands Doing It Right

Some programs have nailed the balance between value and emotional engagement, IMO:

  • Sephora Beauty Insider: Rewards + community, with points, gifts, classes, and a space to swap beauty tips.
  • Starbucks Rewards: A seamless app, gamified challenges, and daily rituals that make customers feel part of something bigger.
  • Nike Membership: Training, early access to drops, and belonging to a fitness community.

Building Loyalty Programs That Resonate

The next generation of loyalty will beย experiential, emotional, and interactive. Expect to see:

  • Gamified experiencesย (challenges, streaks, unlockable rewards).
  • Community-building featuresย (forums, events, peer-to-peer interaction).
  • Choice-driven perksย (members vote on perks, tailor their benefits).
  • Exclusivityย (early access, invite-only events, VIP content).

In short: programs that donโ€™t just give, but involve.

Points may get someone to sign up.
Butย connectionย is what makes them stay.
