Happy New Year!
I don’t set new resolutions on January 1st, I usually pick them up as they come to me throughout the year. There are a few resolutions that I adopted last year that are worth recapping as I intend to carry them into 2024. They can be easily summed up as “in 2024 I will continue to get more personal”.
I have always kept my professional and personal sides separate. “Don’t get too close to people at work”. “Don’t become friends with your employees”. “Keep it ultra-professional with your boss”. These were principles that guided me throughout the last two decades. They were also the ones that prevented people from getting to know the real me, and if I’m honest, they are also the reason I struggled being fully happy in my career. Over the past year I have made some small shifts, which have now become my all year resolutions.
More personal posts
“Keep LinkedIn strictly professional”, I’ve subscribed to this rule since the inception of the platform. Last year, I broke that rule (like here and here) and it has led to some of the most impactful growth of my professional career and increased my overall sense of purpose. In 2024, expect to see more posts from the heart… like this one.
More personal professional relationships
Fun fact about me: I am an introvert. I hide it well, but I do find networking, socializing (especially with people I don’t know well) and small talk a bit challenging and emotionally tiring. As a consultant networking is an essential part of developing new business, so I have had to find ways to power through my introversion. One way is my new policy about personally connecting with all my LinkedIn contacts. In 2024 I aim to create more meaningful and purposeful networking opportunities and socialize even more with like-minded people.
More personal growth
Though I consider myself to be an expert in marketing, I know there’s always room for growth and additional knowledge. Since I learn best by doing, this year I am actively seeking out projects in industries that are new to me or that take me out of my comfort zone. Projects that meet those criteria will benefit from rate cuts. (!!)
More personal projects
To balance out work, I am devoting one day a week to causes close to my heart, as well as some passion projects. Like the line of simple notebooks that I have started in order to test out some features on Amazon and have begun gaining popularity in the past few months.
More collaborative workouts
I don’t love exercising. Last year, I picked up climbing. A sport that requires a partner. My climbing buddy and I have hit the wall multiple times a week for months and we both feel great about it. Having someone else rely on me has helped increase my commitment to getting in shape, and my motivation. This year, I have already added a new sport: boxing. One that I practice with my daughter.
I’d love to know if any of these all-year resolutions resonate with you! Share your own resolutions or personal growth stories in the comments below.
